The essential family vacation checklist

Travelling can be a stressful process for some people and considering that you are already reading this post, you must understand that travelling with a family can be an absolute nightmare, unless you are well prepared. You see, writing a list is a good thing in any walk of life, for our brains are supposed to be used when creating ideas rather than storing information. That being said let us take a weight off your mind for the upcoming trip by providing you with the following family vacation checklist:

Passport and tickets

Some of the most important items huh? You cannot travel abroad without these items so make sure they are not only on the list but also the last thing you check before leaving home.

Credit/Debit Cards

Honestly, these are easily forgotten and you cannot do without. Have a wallet but consider storing them separately so that if you lose one, you don’t lose them all.

Spare cash

Again, consider keeping a small amount of emergency money stored away somewhere. It doesn’t have to be a lot, just enough to buy food in the supermarket if you can’t afford a meal out.

Insurance Documents

What’s the point in having insurance if you do not have these details to hand when you need them? Take several copies and make sure everyone knows where they are kept.

Driving License and printout of confirmation

Are you renting, or thinking about renting, a car? You’ll need all of these when picking up the car and most often, the above mentioned credit cards.

Smart Phone/Laptop

These are a lifesaver for all kinds of reasons. A smart phone can be hooked up to free Wi-Fi in most destinations and it has some really useful apps which can be used without connection, most notably maps or GPS. As for the laptop, can you do without it or is it needed for work? Do the kids like to watch movies on it? You should probably take it.

You really need to capture these moments with the family, so take the camera – unless of course your smart phone is the camera.

Speaks for itself that you should have phone chargers, camera chargers etc but make sure you pick up an adapter so that you can use the charger in whatever destination you are visiting.

Small backpack

Whether you use this as a carry-on for the flight/bus/train, a small backpack is always useful for heading out in the city for the day or venturing into the outdoors.

Take the basics such as painkillers and cough medicine but don’t forget any prescribed medication for the children along with a copy of the prescriptions should you run out.

First Aid Kit

Essential and unfortunately many families do not carry one. What if one of the kids has a fall or unexpected burn? Buy one, make one but at the very least – take one with you.

Sunglasses, contact lenses and prescription glasses

If you wear glasses/lenses for reading or general use, you will want them but if it’s sunny where you are going, save yourself having to buy a new pair and pack them.

Hairbrush, hair-bands and hairdryer

Maybe your hotel or wherever you stay will have the latter but the family will definitely need the hairbrush, hair clips etc

Again, save yourself having to buy one on location – does it rain often in your chosen destination? These are small and lightweight to pack it just in case.

Sun cream

This could be the difference between a relaxing holiday and one spent in pain, bring it and make sure everyone uses it.

Insect repellant

Are there any viruses or known mosquito’s in the region? Insect repellant will not only make life more comfortable but it will also prevent any unwanted disease.
